Bhujbal threatens to withdraw police from Central installations
The Maharashtra government Friday hit back at the Centre for its refusal to deploy more central para-military forces in the state, saying it would withdraw police from Central
Government installations in the state.
"We need additional deployment and if the Centre does not fulfil our requirement, there will be no option but to withdraw state forces from Central installations," Home Minister Chhagan Bhujbal told reporters at the Vidhan Bhavan.
He said a letter to this effect would be sent to the Union government reiterating the state government's demand to deploy 23 contingents of additional central security forces.
Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said it was the responsibility of the Centre to deploy additional para-military forces in a state when the law and order situation so requires.
He also said his government was firm on implementing the recommendations of the Srikrishna Commission that probed the 1992-93 Mumbai riots. "The government's decision to prosecute Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray is a step in this direction," he said.
When asked whether the present political situation had created a storm within his government, Deshmukh said: "There is no storm. The skies are clear."
