Karnataka CM non-committal on release of Cauvery waters

E-Mail this report to a friend

Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna remained non-committal on Sunday on his Tamil Nadu counterpart M Karunanidhi's claim that the state would be releasing 19 thousand million cubic feet of water from the Cauvery to Tamil Nadu.

When reporters asked him about the claim, Krishna said: "We will be releasing water" as had been agreed at the Cauvery River Authority meeting in New Delhi. He declined to say anything more.

At the meeting, Karnataka had agreed to release 6 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu to save the standing crops in the state.

He expressed confidence that the vexed Cauvery waters dispute could be solved without jeorpardising the interests of the farmers of Karnataka. But charity should begin at home, he added, stressing that the interests of the state are paramount.

He said: "I have told the prime minister and chief ministers of other riparian states that we are looking towards the rain god. He will come to the rescue. Water levels are rising in major rivers and the meteorological department has predicted a normal monsoon. The next one month will be crucial."
