3 killed as naxalites strike in APSyed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad Two policemen and a woman naxalite were killed in an exchange of fire following an attack on Tirumalgiri police station in Nalgonda district in Andhra Pradesh by left-wing extremists belonging to the outlawed People's War Group on Friday night. Andhra Pradesh Police spokesman Shujath Ali said that before attacking the station, the left-wing extremists attacked a mandal revenue office and a telephone exchange in Tirumalgiri town, about 180 km east of Hyderabad. About 40 left wing extremists belonging to two armed squads of the PWG stormed into the town. The heavily-armed naxalites included 20 women. One group attacked the revenue office, while the other the exchange, with grenades and landmines. Both buildings were extensively damaged. Telecommunication links between Tirumalgiri and other places were cut off following the attack. The naxalites then attacked the police station. They opened fire at the policemen, who retaliated. In the exchange of fire, from 6.45 pm to 8 pm, two policemen and a woman Naxalite were killed. The policemen were head constable Bade Mian and constable Sriramulu. The police station building was damaged partially. The exchange of fire ended when the naxalites fled after additional police forces were brought in from Tungathurthy, Arapalli, Atmakur, Nutanka and Munagala police stations. Senior police officers also went to Tirumalgiri to supervise combing up operations. A red alert has been sounded in Nalgonda, Warangal and Karimnagar districts, the spokesman said.
