Party rebels attack Laloo

E-Mail this report to a friend

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief, Laloo Prasad Yadav, was today attacked by the supporters of a rebel candidate at Sabalpur in Chapra district, 40 km from Patna. The former Bihar chief minister was boarding his chopper when the attackers broke his security cordon and surged towards him.

Reports reaching here said though Laloo was not hurt, his chopper suffered extensive damage forcing him to resume his campaign tour in a car.

The district administration said the attackers were supporters of Raj Kumar Rai who has been denied a ticket by the RJD from the Sonepur assembly constituency. Rai has represented Sonepur twice in the state assembly. This time, however, the party has replaced him with Prof Ramanuj Prasad.

Laloo Yadav was elected to the state assembly twice from Sonepur - first in 1980 and then in 1985. In 1997 he was elected to Parliament from Chapra.

Last week Sharad Yadav of the Janata Dal (United) and Nitish Kumar of the Samata Party were attacked by angry party workers at Rupauli in Purnea district.
