Bail for four Dara Singh associates

M I Khan in Bhubaneswar

Four associates of Dara Singh, the main accused in the murder of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines, were granted bail by the Orissa High Court.

They were accused of involvement in the murder of a Muslim shopkeeper last year at Padabada market under Thakurmunda police station of Mayurbhanj district.

The four were in jail custody following their arrest last year. The Mayurbhanj district sessions judge had rejected their bail applications earlier.

Dara Singh is currently in jail custody at Baripada. His trial hearing in the Staines murder case was adjourned in the first week this month and is scheduled to start on January 2, 2001.

Twenty eight-year-old shopkeeper Sheikh Rehman was looted and murdered in broad daylight allegedly by Dara and his associates on August 26 last year. Thakurmunda police station had registered a case of murder against Dara and his associates in this connection following an FIR lodged by village watchman Mukund Nayak.
