HC restrains Jaya from criticising Gopal: PTIThe Madras High Court Friday restrained AIADMK general secretary Jayalalitha from making defamatory statements against Nakkheeran editor R R Gopal, in connection with his role as an official emissary to meet fugitive Veerappan. Justice A Ramamurthy granted the interim injunction on an application by Gopal in a civil suit claiming damages for a recent statement by Jayalalitha against him. In his application, Gopal contended that Jayalalitha had called him a 'blackmailer' and 'an agent of Veerappan' on August 14. She had also alleged that he 'extorted' money for Veerappan. Gopal contended that he had been chosen as an emissary to negotiate the release of Kannada film star Dr Rajakumar and three others who had been abducted by Veerappan on July 30. He had accepted it in the general interest of peaceful life of Tamils living in Karnataka. Her statement had brought him 'loss of reputation, public contempt and mental agony', Gopal said. As he apprehended that Jayalalitha may come out with further 'false and scandalous' statements, he was constrained to file the suit and seek an injunction.
