PIL in Madras HC against release of extremistsAn advocate has asked the Madras High Court to direct the Tamil Nadu government not to accept any 'illegal' demands of outlaw Veerappan for releasing abducted Kannada film star Dr Rajakumar and three others. In a public interest writ petition filed Wednesday, the lawyer, V Krishnamurthy, sought direction to the state government not to accept any illegal demands and an interim injunction against releasing five Tamil extremists, as demanded by the Veerappan gang. The lawyer contended that as the four hostages were confined in the territory of the state, its police chief was duty-bound to rescue them. Moreover, the state government had no powers to restrain the director general of police from taking legal steps to rescue them. The petition is likely to come up for admission Thursday. PTI
