Former Karnataka chief minister S Nijalingappa died at his residence Vinaya in Chitradurga at 22.30 hours IST on Tuesday. He was 98.

Nijalingappa was considered the architect of Karnataka`s unification and one of the last titans of the Gandhian era.

His health deteriorated after he had a fall and fractured his leg last month.

He was treated at the government Bowring and Lady Curzon hospital in Bangalore and on July 27 he was shifted to Chitradurga in a critical condition, according to his last wish to return home.

The last rites will take place on Wednesday at 3 pm at Chitradurga with full state honours.

The Karnataka government has declared a holiday in the state for schools, colleges, government offices and for banks under the Negotiable Instruments Act on August 9 as a mark of respect. A three-day state mourning will also be observed starting Wednesday.

Chief Minister S M Krishna will attend the funeral.
