Cauvery authority's meeting postponed

E-Mail this report to a friend

The meeting of the Cauvery Valley Authority scheduled to be held in New Delhi tomorrow to consider Tamil Nadu's plea for release of Cauvery water has been postponed, according to official sources today.

The meeting, to be presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was to consider Tamil Nadu's request for release of water to save standing crops in about ten lakh hectares in the Thanjavur delta. As soon as the date for the proposed meeting was announced, Karnataka Chief Minister J H Patel said he could not attend it owing to his illness and suggested that the meeting be postponed.

Earlier, Karnataka had rejected the Cauvery Valley Authority monitoring committee's formula for releasing water to save crops. The prime minister also deputed a team of water resources ministry officials to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for an on-the-spot study of the situation.
