Swollen Narmada swallows parts of Hoshangabad

E-Mail this report to a friend

The turbulent Narmada, swollen by heavy downpour and the continuous release of water from the Bargi and Tawa dams, has swallowed several villages and almost one-third of Hoshangabad oHotown, rendering thousands of people homeless.

Thirty per cent of the town has been inundated while as many as 62 villages of the district have been engulfed by the floods. Hundreds of affected people have been shifted to safer places by the authorities with the help of the army helicopter. The river water was flowing just below the bridge in the city, and low-lying areas in the outskirts of the town including Adamgarh, Dongarbara, Sanjay Nagar, Gwaltoli and Minakshi have been endangered by the deluge, while Narayan Nagar, Shanichara, Morchhali, Korighat and Sethani Ghat are totally submerged.

Besides motorboats roaming hither and thither, transporting people to safer places, people were seen using vehicular rubber tubes to move from one place to another in the flooded areas. The confluence of the Narmada and its tributary, the Tawa, at Bandarabhan is the worst flood-hit area. The nearby Balamet and Pilikharat villages have been totally engulfed by the floods.
