The Indian Army foiled a major infiltration attempt by heavily armed Pakistan-trained terrorists in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir early this morning. Three infiltrators were gunned down while trying to sneak into India, official sources said in Jammu.

An alert has been sounded in the border areas and a close vigil is being maintained to foil any such attempts by the terrorists.

The sources said a group of heavily armed terrorists tried to sneak into India in the Nowshera sector in the pre-dawn hours today. But they were challenged by Indian troops. In the resultant exchange of fire, three of the intruders were killed while the others fled back into Pakistan.

A big cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the slain terrorists.

The army had on Friday recovered two anti-tank guided missiles in Gotaru area near Kotranka in Rajouri district. A similar missile-launcher had been recovered in the district on May 24.

This is the first time in the decade-long militancy in the state that arms and ammunition of such lethal dimensions have been recovered from the border areas of the state, particularly in Jammu region.

The anti-tank guided missile is basically meant for destroying tanks, but can be effectively used against all static targets like bunkers, ammunition dumps, parked or low-flying helicopters. It was extensively used in the Afghan war and in West Asia.
