EC disqualifies 10 candidates for not filing election expensesThe Election Commission has disqualified ten candidates, who had contested the 1998 Lok Sabha elections from Baramulla and Jammu parliamentary constituencies, for three years for not lodging account of election expenses. According to chief electoral officer, Jammu and Kashmir, S V Bhave, these candidates have failed to lodge any account of election expenses in time specified by law as required under the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951 and the rules made thereunder. Bhave said the candidates did not furnish any reason or satisfactory explanation for their failure to furnish the details even after due notice was given by the EC. After giving due consideration to the representations made by these candidates, the EC found that there is no good reason or justification for their failure to comply with its orders. In its May 7, 1999 order, the EC declared these candidates to be disqualified for being a member of either house of Parliament or of the legislative assembly or legislative council for a period of three years from the date of order, he said.
