Death to four in Rajiv murder is 'fair', say Sri Lankans

The Sri Lankan intelligentsia and politicians have described the death sentence to four in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination as ''fair judgment."

While most Tamil parties feel the Indian Supreme Court judgement has not diluted the role of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam, some wonder why so many of the LTTE cadre involved in the case got free.

''Anyone who perpetuate violence should not be shown any mercy,'' said one prominent Tamil party leader who did not want to be quoted, referring to the dissension of one judge. He said the accused Nalini should know that her act had orphaned several kids.

Another leader said it was an emotional and political judgement that clearly proved the involvement of the LTTE in the assassination.

The Sri Lankan papers gave prominence to the news carrying it as the lead article. However, there has been no comment from the government or the LTTE so far.

Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a human bomb on May 21,1991 at Siriperumbudur near Madras.
