Punjab wants advance notice of war

The Punjab government has requested the defence ministry to keep it informed of the activities along the border to enable it to prepare contingency plans.

The request was contained in an official communique sent by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to Defence Minister George Fernandes on June 25. Copies of the letter were released to the press in Amritsar today by the Jalandhar division commissioner B K Srivastava after a tour of the border belt of this district.

The communique requested for at least a week's advance notice so that residents of the border villages could be intimated, enabling them to move to safer areas before the outbreak of a war with Pakistan. The communique reminded the defence ministry that in the 1971 war the border residents were taken by surprise when Pakistan attacked India and they lost much of their valuables.
