12 labourers massacred in J&K

E-Mail this report to a friend

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Twelve Bihari Hindu labourers working in a brick-kiln at Sandoo Achabal village in Anantnag district, 60 kilometres from Srinagar, were gunned down by unidentified militants around midnight last night.

A senior police officer told rediff.com that a group of heavily armed militants entered the brick-kiln, woke up the labourers and opened indiscriminate fire killing 12 of them.

Senior police and security force officials have rushed to the spot along with reinforcements. Massive search operations have been mounted to trace the killers.

No one has yet owned responsibility for the massacre which follows yesterday's killing of 17 Muslim villagers in Poonch district.

Sources said that the brick-kiln owner Ali Mohammad Yatoo belonged to Bulbul Nowgam and was not present at the spot when the militants struck.

The authorities have beefed up security in the entire valley.
