Militants expose Pak lieReports in Pakistani media have quoted the leader of an Islamic militant group as saying that their operations in Kargil were being supported by the Pakistani army. This exposes the Pakistani lie that the intrusion into Kashmir was the handiwork of Kashmiri militants and that it had nothing to do with it. Chief of Markaz-i-Dawaul Irshad, Hafeez Mohammad Syed told the Urdu daily Khabrian that the militants who have occupied Indian territory in Jammu and Kashmir were trained for two years in Pakistan. ''MDI is active in Kargil through its military wing Lashkar-i-Taiba.'' In fact, one of its top operatives, Zakiur Rahman Lakhvi, who has also fought in the Afghan war, is now believed to be working in close operation with the Pakistani army in Kargil. Syed told Khabrian that the main objective of the incursion in Kargil was to choke the Indian supplies to Siachen glacier through the Srinagar-Leh highway and to make it difficult for the Indian Army to carry out operations against pro-Pak militants in Kashmir. The MDI runs a training institute for jehad in Mudrike near Lahore. It trains youth from Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Arab countries. Muslim students from the Chinese province of Singkiang also come to Mudrike for training, he said. It is believed that the MDI enjoys the patronage of the Pakistani government and the Inter-Services Intelligence. UNI
