Stars, representing the nation's two favourite vocations, cinema and cricket, will play two cricket matches at Madurai and Madras on July 11 and 18 respectively to raise funds for the families of the Kargil martyrs.

The cricket stars, who would be seen in action, include India's best known all rounder Kapil Dev, speedsters Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad apart from Sadagopan Ramesh, Robin Singh and a few other top state cricketers, organising committee members, former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth and actor Sarath Kumar, who have embarked on this charitable mission, announced at a press conference in Madras.

"We are aiming to raise Rs 50 million from these matches," they said and added that a Madras-based steel company was the main sponsor of the event, while a few other business houses in Madras and other parts of Tamil Nadu were co-sponsors.

The second match at Madras would be telecast live by the Sun TV, the popular private TV channel, with complete commentary and close-up replays, Srikkanth announced.

Meanwhile, in another novel venture, Capa, a private chess academy, is organising an open rapid tournament, collecting Rs 200 or more from those who wish to participate. The proceeds would be donated to the Kargil war victims' relief fund.
