Pak cancels 35,000 soldiers' civil dutiesWith the ''possibility of the Kargil conflict escalating'', the Pakistani government has asked all military personnel and officers up to the fourth rank of major attached with the Water and Power Development Authority to report back to their respective units. However, officers in the rank of colonel and brigadier have been allowed to stay on till further orders. A report said that nearly 35,000 army personnel are to report back to their units. The government had earlier directed the army to work with the WAPDA to check corruption and electricity theft. The postings were earlier valid till the last week of July. Pakistan has set up defence committees along the Line of Control in view of the recent flare-up between the two countries, reports said. The committees, comprising former army personnel, have been provided with arms for self-defence. Reports said youngsters were being given military training and inducted into these committees. UNI
