Talks only way out: Aziz

Pakistani Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz has said that talks with India is the only way to reduce tension in the prevailing situation on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

In an interview to a television channel yesterday, Sartaj Aziz said, ''We are disappointed and concerned about India's refusal to resume dialogue to reduce the tension.''

''Pakistan,'' he said, ''is exercising maximum restraint as we are committed to the Lahore Declaration. We will do our best to avoid escalation.''

He said the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had accepted the offer of Nawaz Sharief to hold a foreign ministers level meeting.

We expected that the dates proposed by Pakistan would be acceptable to the Indian government or they would propose some other date, he added.

He was of the view that the people of the two countries are opposed to further escalation of the situation on the LoC.
