Air strikes on for eighth dayIndian Air Force fighter planes and helicopter gunships carried out two missions this morning to flush out Pakistan-supported infiltrators in the Kargil sector as the ground operations of the Indian Army continued to cut off the sustenance routes of the intruders. This was the eighth day of air strikes by the IAF, which are being used to soften the targets before the infantry takes over. The army troops were moving in to occupy positions from where the infiltrators, mainly Pakistan army regulars and Afghan mercenaries, had withdrawn. Reports said that there were still some positions where the intruders were getting reinforcements from Pakistan and efforts were being made to isolate these positions. The army said the troops had made steady progress in the Kargil sector. Appropriate force levels had been deployed in the sector to facilitate speedy execution of operations despite the rugged terrain configuration and inhospitable weather conditions. The developments on the Line of Control were being closely monitored and necessary precautionary measures instituted. UNI
