The army chiefs of India and Pakistan may discuss the situation along the Line of Control in Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir if they meet here on the sidelines of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Sri Lankan Army.

The service chiefs of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have been invited to attend the celebrations, army commander Lieutenant General Weerasooriya said yesterday at a press conference called to announce the programmes that would be organised in connection with the anniversary.

The Pakistan and Bangladesh army chiefs have already confirmed their participation while India is yet to respond.

''If the Indian army chief confirms his participation then the meeting between the army chiefs would be possible and this may contribute to the smoothening of relations between the two countries,'' Lt Gen Weerasooriya said.

Meanwhile, the United States army commander of the Asia and Pacific area, Lt Gen Edwin Smith who had come here on July 20 on a familiarisation visit, met Lt Gen Weerasooriya and some other senior officers besides the defence secretary.
