Janata Dal seniors oppose tie-up with both BJP, Congress
The Janata Dal will have no truck with the Bharatiya Janata Party or the Congress in the Lok Sabha election, but under pressure from Karnataka Chief Minister Jayadevappa Patel and former Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, the party is considering seat adjustments with allies of the BJP.
Talking to reporters after two rounds of meetings of the party's Political Affairs Committee, senior leader Bapu Kaldate said the question of tying up with allies of the BJP is under discussion.
But he parried questions on the party's stand on the BJP-sponsored National Democratic Alliance, saying it would be revealed after the PAC completes its discussions tomorrow.
Kaldate, however, ruled out any further split in the party in the wake of the open demand by Paswan for tying up with the Samata Party in Bihar and Patel's plea to join the NDA.
The PAC, he said, took up the political situation in Karnataka in the morning session and Bihar in the evening.
The meeting was still on when Kaldate briefed the press.
The overwhelming view of the PAC members is that the party should oppose both the Congress and the BJP in Karnataka, he said.
The meeting, presided over by party president Sharad Yadav, was attended, among others, by former prime ministers H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral, former Union ministers Madhu Dandavate and S Jaipal Reddy, and veteran leader from Bombay Mrinal Gore.
