Pak warns India against widening conflict

Pakistan today warned India of ''serious consequences'' if it widened the current conflict in Kargil.

A statement after a meeting of the key defence committee of the cabinet that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief chaired said Pakistan was ''prepared to deal with any eventuality and to give an effective response to any action of aggression.''

However, the committee repeated Pakistan's stand that ''all issues, including the current crisis in Kargil, should be resolved through negotiations.''

''The committee expressed the hope that India would realise the serious consequences of a wider conflict and avoid this perilous course in the interest of peace and stability in the region,'' it said. Pakistan did not want war, ''but if war was imposed, Pakistan was fully capable of defending every inch of its territory,'' it added.
