Assam BJP urges repeal of Illegal Migrants Determination Act

The Bharatiya Janata Party's Assam unit has urged the central government to immediately repeal the Illegal Migrants Determination Act by promulgating an ordinance, if necessary.

Releasing the resolutions adopted at the state executive meeting at Silchar recently, state BJP president Narain Barkatoki said the act should be repealed to remove the hurdles in identifying illegal migrants from across the border.

If necessary, an amendment should be made in the Foreigners Act to identify the migrants. There should be one law for the whole country, he said.

The party also unanimously adopted the governor's report, except for a few points on the issue of foreign nationals, which was submitted to the President.

Referring to the insurgency in the state, Barkatoki said the party had urged both the Centre and the state government to take the initiative and discuss the matter with different militant organisations.

The insurgency is the result of unemployment and economic backwardness, he said.

He also urged the Union government to release the rehabilitation package for surrendered militants.

Barkatoki said the law-and-order situation in the state is deteriorating and urged the state government to take steps to improve it.

The BJP also expressed concern at "large-scale corruption" in the administration and suggested that vigilance and monitoring cells be constituted to implement developmental schemes.

The party meeting expressed concern about the bad condition of roads and bridges in the state and demanded urgent steps to repair them since sufficient funds had been released.

It also demanded that the government take steps to protect the world's biggest river island Majuli from erosion.
