Naxalites blow up rail tracks near Guntur

E-Mail this report to a friend

Left wing extremists of the People's War Group, who have called a two-day general strike in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh to protest against the killing of some top leaders in an alleged fake encounter, blasted the railway track near Nadikudi railway station in Guntur district on Wednesday.

Police sources said that about 15 Naxalites planted detonators and blasted the track, damaging 12 sleepers. Following this, the Narasapur Express, in which the state minister Alapati Rajendra Prasad was travelling, and the Secunderabad-Chennai Express were detained at the railway station and sent back to Secunderabad. The Tirupati-bound Narayanadri Express was diverted via Vijayawada.

Top police and railway officials rushed to the spot. The Naxalites had blasted a touring theatre belonging to the ruling Telugu Desam Party leader Venna Sambasiva Reddy at Ganapavaram in the district yesterday, the sources added.
