Unprecedented security cover in NagalandNagaland was brought under an unprecedented security cover following threats by underground outfits to boycott the Indepedence Day, escalating violence in the neighbouring states and the celebration of 'Naga independence day' today. Inspector General of Police (range) N N Walling, who is in charge of security, said that foolproof anti-sabotage security arrangements had been made throughout the state for peaceful celebration of Independence Day tomorrow. All district superintendents of police have been asked to be alert for any eventuality and keep strict vigil at all vulnerable places, specially the places of flag hoisting. The police and the para-military forces have been on round-the-clock patrol in all sensitive places. Equipped with bomb detectors and sniffer dogs, they had been checking sensitive areas. Although there was no proof of any Inter-Services Intelligence activity in the state, the intelligence agencies had been alerted to keep vigil in some areas. Kohima Superintendent of Police I Toshitsongba Aier also said that checking and frisking of vehicles had been intensified on all national and state highways. Specially trained officials had been deployed with sniffer dogs, mine sweepers, metal detectors and other sophisticated equipment to prevent any sabotage. Besides round-the-clock police patrolling, raids had been conducted in some localities of Kohima, including hotels and suspected hideouts, to nab anti-social activists, he said. He also requested the people to cooperate with the police to check disruptive activities. Meanwhile, the underground factions of Nagaland are celebrating 'Naga independence day' today in their hideouts at different places of the state. However, no untoward incident has been reported so far, the police said. UNI
