Karunanidhi opposes move to form alternative government
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M Karunanidhi tonight declared that his party would not support any move to form an alternative government at the Centre.
This comes as a relief to the beleaguered Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which is to table a motion of confidence in the Lok Sabha tomorrow morning.
Karunanidhi told reporters in Madras that his bete noire, All-India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha, is camping in New Delhi to get his government dismissed and has initiated moves for an alternative political formation towards this end. In these circumstances, it would be suicidal for the DMK to support any such move, he said.
Even if the DMK votes for Vajpayee's motion of confidence, it may not be enough to save his government. But Karunanidhi's statement is the first sign of hope for the BJP, which has striven over the past week to gather support from disparate groups in the Lok Sabha, with no success.
