Srinagar chief judicial magistrate attacked in court

A young man attacked the Srinagar chief judicial magistrate in her court this morning.

The CJM, Goussul Nissa Jeelani, was rushed to the city's main hospital where she was treated for severe bleeding from the face.

Later, Jeelani was shifted to Srinagar's Soura Medical Institute.

Witnesses said Manzoor Ahmad, the brother of a pro-government militant, entered the court and asked the CJM to direct the government to provide him security. Jeelani told Manzoor to meet police officers in this regard.

Militants had allegedly thrown a hand-grenade at Manzoor's house in Rambagh, seriously injuring his mother. Before leaving the court, the youth sought a glass of water. After drinking the water, he flung the glass at the CJM's face.

Security guards overpowered the youth and handed him over to the police.

This is the first time a magistrate has been attacked within a court in the Kashmir valley.

Meanwhile, five personnel of the Central Industries Security Force were wounded when militants threw a hand-grenade at them at Sarai Balla in the city. Two civilians were also hurt. The injured personnel were immediately shifted to hospital in Srinagar.

The Border Security Force allegedly shot dead an autorickshaw driver at Chanpora in uptown Srinagar this morning. The police said the driver had thrown a grenade at the BSF personnel, but it didn't explode. Locals, however, say the autorickshaw driver did not throw a grenade.
