ASSEMBLY POLL '98
|
Trial against film star Roja posted for April 9Popular Tamil and Telugu film actress Roja has appeared before the fifteenth metropolitan magistrate, George Town. A case had been filed against the actress after the cheques issued by her to a Madras-based financier had bounced. A non-bailable warrant had been issued against Roja alias Srilatha by Magistrate Malathi as she had failed to appear before the court earlier. The magistrate posted the trial in the case to April 9. The financier, Mukund Chand Bodhra, had lodged a complaint with the magistrate under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act. He alleged that the film star had borrowed from him Rs 500,000 on July 5, 1996, by executing a promisory note. Two cheques issued by her on May 30 and 31, 1997, for Rs 100,000 each, as part repayment of the loan, had bounced, he said. On March 22 last, Justice A Ramamurthy of the Madras high court had rejected the star's plea that the proceedings pending before the magistrate be quashed. He directed the magistrate to expedite the trial within three months. The judge had held that there was prima facie material to proceed further against the film star. UNI
