SC admits plea against Madani's detention

The Supreme Court today admitted a writ petition challenging the detention of People's Democratic Party founder-president Abdul Nasser Madani under the National Security Act for his alleged involvement in the Coimbatore blasts.

A division bench comprising Justice G T Nanavati and Justice S P Kurdukar admitted the petition after hearing arguments on behalf of the petitioner.

The petition, filed by Madani's wife, seeks the quashing of the detention order passed by the Coimbatore police, calling it motivated and mala fide.

Earlier, senior counsel R K Jain, appearing for Madani's wife, contended that Madani had not been supplied with a number of vital documents, preventing him from making "effective and meaningful representation" against the detention.

Madani was detained under the NSA as his name had been mentioned by two of the accused in the case.
