AIADMK leader rules out destabilising Vajpayee government

All India Anna Dravida Munnetrea Kazagham leader and Union Minister of State for Finance M R Janardhanam today asserted that the outcome of the recent assembly elections in four northern states would not affect the stability of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government at the Centre.

In an informal chat with the media in Thirunelveli, he said there could, however, be uneasy moments in Parliament because of the outcome. At best, the elections could be an acid test for the survival of some caste-based parties in the north, he added.

He said the stability of the government was not just based on numbers.

Janardhanam's observation is considered significant in the context of the AIADMK's perceived plan to keep its options open and explore a possible alignment with the Congress to form an alternative government at the Centre.

Coalition governments in the country has become a compulsion now, he observed.

Asked about the proposed move to form a third front, Janardhanam said it would only be a "back front".
