Samata fields Ved Singh's mother

Panmeshwari, the mother of slain Samata Party candidate Ved Singh, will be fielded from the Nangloi Jat assembly constituency, party general secretary Jaya Jaitly said today.

Ved Singh, a BJP rebel who was contesting from the Outer Delhi assembly segment on the Samata Party ticket, was gunned down on the night of November 9 in Mundka village.

While Ved Singh died on the way to hospital, an associate of his succumbed to bullet injuries the next day. The assailants had come in a Maruti car and opened fire at them at a village square.

The Election Commission had adjourned polling in the Nangloi Jat constituency. According to rules, the Samata Party was given seven days' time to find another candidate.

Ved Singh's killing, the first of an election candidate in Delhi, had sent shockwaves in the capital.

Former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, who hails from Mundka village where the candidate was gunned down, had undertaken a hunger strike after allegations were made that his family members were responsible for the killing. Sahib Singh had later called off his fast after a special team of the Delhi police, which had been given the case, arrested five people.

Delhi Transport Minister Devendra Singh Shaukeen, who was inducted by Chief Minister Sushma Swaraj into the cabinet after she replaced Sahib Singh, is the BJP candidate from Nangloi Jat constituency.
