Congress out of Seemapuri race,
candidate disqualified
The Congress received a setback yesterday when its candidate from Seemapuri (scheduled caste) constituency in Delhi was disqualified by the returning officer on technical grounds.
With this, the main electoral contest in the constituency will be among the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Samajwadi Party, the Bahujan Samaj Party, and the Janata Dal. In all, there are 12 candidates in the fray.
According to returning officer R P Meena, the Congress candidate, Bir Singh, could not provide his relieving order from his employer, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, till 11 am on November 9, the deadline that had been set for the purpose.
Singh, who had resigned from the MCD to contest the election, was asked by Meena to get his relieving order from the corporation before the end of scrutiny on November 7.
But on a request by the candidate, the scrutiny of his papers was put off till yesterday, the last date for withdrawals.
Meena said that as per the Election Commission's rules, the scrutiny period could not have been extended beyond 11 am today.
BJP candidate Chandra Pal had on the day of scrutiny raised an objection over Singh's papers, citing the fact that though he had submitted his resignation from the MCD, where he was an assistant staff inspector, it was yet to be accepted.
Singh's resignation, which was submitted on November 6, the last date for filing nominations, was kept pending because his dues were yet to be cleared and he also had to get clearance from the MCD vigilance cell.
