US yet to decide on Celeste's return, Clinton's visit 'under review'

The Clinton administration has yet not taken any decision on sending its ambassador Richard Celeste back to his post in New Delhi.

In reply to a question, State Department spokesperson James Rubin yesterday said, ''I was just in a meeting with ambassador Celeste. When the administration decides to send him back, I am sure he will be willing to go, and I am sure he will have things to say when he gets back there. But for now he's in the department.''

The ambassador, who was on an official work in the US at the time of India's nuclear tests, was kept back in Washington as a mark of protest against the tests.

In reply to a question about President Clinton's proposed visit to South Asia in November, Rubin said, ''What we are recommending at this point and the president's spokesmen have indicated this as well, is that that the visit is under review.''
