Sukh Ram's son makes it to RSHimachal Vikas Congress candidate Anil Sharma, the son of state Public Works and Power Minister Sukh Ram, was on Friday elected to the Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh. He defeated former state education minister N C Prasher of the Congress by a margin of seven votes in a straight contest. Sharma polled 35 votes while Prasher got 28 of the total 64 ballots cast in the 68-member House. One vote was cancelled for violation of voting procedure. The House has an effective strength of 64 members. The Congress has 31 members while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-HVC alliance has the support of 33 members, including an independent legislator. The voting began at 1000 hours and was through much before 1400 hours, when it was to close. The election was held to fill the vacancy which would be created when Maheshwar Singh of the BJP retires on April 2. UNI
