'People's confidence undermined'
Former finance minister and Tamil Maanila Congress leader P Chidambaram today charged the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government with undermining the confidence of the people on every issue, be it economic, political or international.
Opposing the confidence motion moved by Prime
Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Lok Sabha, Chidambaram said the government at the Centre did not have a programme of its own.
The people of the country had not given the BJP a mandate to rule. Never has this House been divided as today as the main objective of the BJP is to capture power with the help of any available partner,
he said.
Chidambaram regretted that there is no reference to regional
parties in the BJP manifesto nor in the national agenda of the party and its allies.
He asked Vajpayee to search his conscience about the deals his
party had made during the last 20 days to win over a
majority.
Sarcastically, he likened Vajpayee a 'bone setter,' a famous
practice prevailing in Andhra Pradesh.
