SP withdraws Patna candidate

The Samajwadi Party on Monday retired its candidate in the Patna Lok Sabha constituency to favour the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Ram Kripal Yadav, in an attempt to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The decision was announced by party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, who said his party was withdrawing 'to strengthen secular forces in Bihar'. This assumes significance as it indicates proximity between RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav and Mulayam Singh.

C P Thakur is the BJP nominee in Patna.

Sources said Mulayam Singh had discussions with Laloo Yadav about the Hindutva threat in Patna, where repolling is scheduled for March 30.

The Patna election was countermanded following complaints of largescale rigging.
