4 Akali-BJP leaders elected to RS
All the four ruling Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance nominees, including Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra, were elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab today.
Among those elected are Akali Dal-supported Independent Barjinder Singh Hamdard, Akali Dal general secretaries Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Balwinder Singh Bhunder and BJP nominee Lajpat Rai. Hamdard is Punjabi daily Ajit's managing editor.
They were declared elected by returning officer O P Verma, who
is also the Punjab Vidhan Sabha secretary, after the deadline for
withdrawal of candidature ended at 1500 hours. There was no other candidate for any of the five seats to be filled from the
state.
The Opposition parties had boycotted the polls in protest against
the two separate notifications issued by the Election Commission for holding these elections.
