Second-timer makes it to Cabinet
A national secretary of the Bharatiya Janata
Party, Anant Kumar, the MP from Bangalore
South in Karnataka, plunged into politics while a student. He has participated in various student movements, including
the Save Assam movement.
Born on July 22, 1959, Kumar also participated in the
Jayaprakash Narayan movement during the
Emergency between 1975 and
1977, and was jailed for some time.
Kumar was a part
of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's drought relief
committee in the
state.
Right from his student days, Kumar had been an office-bearer
both of the national and state organisations of the Akhil Bharatiya
Vidyarthi Parishad.
He also conducted various training programmes for party workers
at the national and state levels.
He was general secretary of the state BJP between 1988 and
1995.
A widely travelled man, he was the first Indian member of the
drafting committee of the UNESCO conference held in Paris.
Kumar first made it to the Lok Sabha in the 1996
election from Bangalore South.
