Vajpayee to seek consensus on national issues
Prime Minister designate Atal Bihari Vajpayee today said he would seek broad consensus on all national issues and urged all political parties to extend their co-operation in evolving such a consensus.
In a statement issued after he was appointed prime minister by
President K R Narayanan, Vajpayee said, ''The results of the recent Lok Sabha election have not given a clear majority to anybody. But this flaw in the verdict can be overcome if parties set aside confrontationist politics and become participants in the noble task of nation building."
''Tomorrow marks the beginning of a new era of co-operation,
conciliation and consensus,'' he said.
To ensure that the nation as a whole does not suffer, he said the
government must not only continue uninterrupted, but there must be good governance. ''We and our allies are committed that India gets good governance. It is no doubt a difficult task we have set for ourselves, but I am confident that we will be able to accomplish this task with everybody's co-operation,'' he added.
Vajpayee appealed to ''every section of society and polity to
help us provide India with political stability, economic prosperity
and social harmony''.
''Let us together dedicate ourselves to the tasks ahead and not
look back at past differences,'' he added.
