Wisner defends showing satellite pix to Narasimha Rao's aide

Former US ambassador to India Frank Wisner has said that an action he took in 1995 while he was ambassador could not have helped New Delhi fool US intelligence agencies about its preparation for the nuclear tests it conducted last month.

He was quoted in the Washington Times as having said that he had allowed an Indian official to look at a US spy satellite photograph. But the official, an aide to then prime minister P V Narasimha Rao, saw the photo for only ''seconds,'' he added.

Apparently, he was replying to criticism in the US that the photo he showed at that time enabled Indian authorities to mask the technique of dodging US satellites.
