US denies visa to Atomic Energy Commission chiefThe United States has denied a visa to the Atomic Energy Commission chairman R Chidambaram under its new policy, effected immediately after the Pokhran tests in May. US officials, however, claim the visa was not denied as such, but that Chidambaram withdrew his request. Chidambaram wanted to visit the US to attend an international conference on crystallography. Sources said though the US encourages free movement of people, following the nuclear tests, it has begun to screen applications carefully on a case-to-case basis. UNI
