Handsome raise in poll expense ceiling

The Union government has enhanced the ceiling on election expenses for large Lok Sabha constituencies from Rs 450,000 to Rs 1.5 million, and for assembly constituencies from Rs 150,000 to Rs 600,000.

It has also by an ordinance amended the Representation of People's Act to empower the chief electoral officers of all states and Union territories to utilise the employees of universities and other institutions financed by the central and state governments for conducting elections.

The government took this action on the Election Commission's request. The EC had called for substantially increasing the ceiling on election expenses and also to allow it to deploy employees of government-aided institutions.
