Jaya threatens BJP over Cauvery issue

The All India Anna DMK-led front in Tamil Nadu will review its support to the Vajpayee government, if the Centre failed to notify the original draft scheme on the Cauvery waters issue and submit it before the Supreme Court on August 12, AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha announced today.

Talking to newsmen at the party headquarters, she said it was premature to talk about withdrawal of support to the BJP-led government now, but the Front would review its support, depending on what action the Vajpayee government took on the issue.

Jayalalitha alleged that TN Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had frittered away the golden opportunity to protect the state's interests on the issue and meekly submitted to the Centre by agreeing to the establishment of a modified Cauvery Valley Authority, which according to her, was unworkable and had no statutory powers.

She said there was a genuine ground to suspect that Karunanidhi had surrendered the state's rights in return for an assurance that he would be protected from prosecution on the basis of the interim and final reports of the Jain Commission, which indicted him.

Asked if she had any proof to substantiate her claim, she said it was not easy to produce evidence on such matters. It was possible that someone might have negotiated with Karunanidhi on the prime minister's behalf, she added.
