Karunanidhi to attend PM's Cauvery meet despite criticism

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today regretted that leaders of some political parties, including All India Anna DMK general secretary J Jayalalitha, were opposing his participation in the August 6 conclave of chief ministers of riparian states convened by the prime minister in New Delhi to discuss the Cauvery water issue.

In a statement in Madras, he pointed out that the representatives of the AIADMK and 11 other parties, had not objected to the unanimous resolution passed at yesterday's all-party meeting authorising him to attend the conference.

These 12 parties had earlier stated that he should not attend the conference, he added.

Karunanidhi said though some parties had criticised him for attending the conference, he would not lose patience and take the criticism as a "tonic" and an encouragement.

"I will ensure full protection of Tamil Nadu's legitimate interests as enunciated in the resolution passed in the all- party meeting as well as the suggestions put forth there," he added.
