Subject: That's a lovely article!

I love every word of this article. True indeed, these people who are contributing to brain-drain should never get the best of both worlds. They don't keep their lousy stinking traps shut either in America or any damn nation. They keep crying hoarse about our country and behave in a fashion that create a negative opinion of India. I pray that they never set foot on the Indian shores without a visa, and with a time limit to chase them back. India is no lost island for any moron to visit whenever he or she wants. India is for Indians and Indians alone. Keep writing, Mahesh. Lovely one.

Subject: Article on Fiji Indians by Ashwin Mahesh

I want to thank Ashwin for taking a little delight in talking to Fiji-Indians. Being a Fiji-Indian myself, I understand the joy of thinking of India as matrubhoomi. I have been there and I can only sympathise with these poor slobs. The only thing I can say is they should go to Fiji for a visit. My own root-tracking was a complete disaster. Now I know what it feels like to be a bastard -- I don't mean my parents were mixed or anything, but India doesn't and cannot reciprocate the love or feeling I have for India or its people.

Subject: The Home Coming Article

Well written article. Well, here is another real strange story, "another Fiji Indian." I am a 23 year old from Fiji. My parents and 3 grandparents were born in Fiji (both Fiji Indians), and one grandparent and all great-grandparents born in India. My parents are still in Fiji with the rest of the family (grandma and all) and I live in Anchorage, Alaska, in the USA. I came here to further my education and love it up here.

I always wanted to visit India and find out a little about my ancestors. Like most of us "Fiji Indians" we don't know a lot about our ancestry, not because we don't want to, but there really wasn't any way of knowing. It seemed like our great-grandparents left India without really keeping in contact with their relatives. At least, that is my understanding. Your article is reflective of so many "Indians like us" who love India just the same even though we weren't born there! To me, Fiji Indians are no different than India Indians, deep down we all believe in the same things, our values, cultures, and mostly we are all human.

Hopefully one of these days my family and I can take a pilgrimage trip to India. That's a dream for all of us. Thanks for publishing the article and for including "peculiar" Indians like us!

Subject: More sense in article please

I find some of Ashwin's remarks on Madras unacceptable. I would like to see him talk more sense than gossip, else I will quit visiting Gossip Site.

Dear Ashwin,

I don't think this a flip-flop at all. I didn't read the earlier article. But this article seems patronising of Indians who have made lives abroad. Patronage must surely be a kind of prejudice in this context.

Certainly Indian citizens are different from Indians abroad. Both differ from first-generation NRIs. I think Indians abroad cling to their baggage of Indian heritage much more than say, Italians, Greeks or Philippines. I'm not sure that it does anyone any good.
