Like Aamir Khan, Toby Stephens admitted he was nervous for the mahurat clap. "But I am happy the opening shot went well."

Stephens said that when he read the script, he decided that he had to be in the film. "It was one of the best scripts I've read in a long time," he said. "Besides, I was very impressed with Aamir's acting skills in Lagaan."

About his role, Stephens said, "Captain Gordon has lived most of his life in India. He has a deep sympathy for Indians. But he is torn between his loyalty to the Company and India. There is cross-cultural love. It is unusual, but very realistic."

This is Stephens's first trip to India. "I wanted to come to India as a tourist for quite some time," he said. "I'm happy to work here."
