Review Mujhe Kucch Kehna HaiMujhe Kucch Kehna Hai

Sukanya Verma

Tring! tring! (Phone rings)Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai

Mini: Hello?

Simi: *excited* Hi! It's me Simi. Guess what?

Mini: *triumphant* You lost the bet? You actually liked Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai?

Simi: I did. You will too.

Mini: Really? Tell me all about it.

Simi: Why don't you see it for yourself?

Mini: Oh c'mon, please?

Simi: Okay, okay. Basically, there's this guy Karan -- you know, that old-timer Jeetendra's son, Tusshar -- who spends more time in the canteen than in classrooms. He's the drummer of his college band, hangs around with dumb cronies, speak Bombay lingo in Delhi (Mujhe Kucch Kehna is set in New Delhi) and scores 36 per cent in exams.

Mini: I'm impressed. He's much better than me. I flunked my midterm.

Simi: Hush! Being the youngest in his family, he's pampered rotten by his indulgent Tauji (Amrish Puri) and mom (Himani Shivpuri). But his dad (Dalip Tahil) just chews his head off all the time, man.

Mini: What's new in that? Anyways where does Rinke Khanna fit in all this?

Simi: She is Ria, Tusshar's dominating elder sister, studying to become a doctor.

Mini: Hmm.

Simi: On a Diwali night, Karan spots this hot babe Pooja.

Mini: Pooja?

Simi: Kareena Kapoor, duffer!

Mini: Cool. So it's love at first sight?Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai

Simi: You got it. He bumps into her several times but has no info about her whereabouts. Then, Karan happens to save Pooja's life and the two become good friends.

Mini: Just good friends? How boring.

Simi: No baba, there are lots of songs and dances popping up every ten minutes.

They're cool; they've been picturised (Johny Lal) and choreographed (Ahmed Khan) in the picturesque New Zealand and in Delhi.

Hey, you know what. The colourful, bright look of the film is straight out of say, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai or Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai.

Mini: *dramatically* Oh please! No way. No comparisons with my Hrithik.

Simi: Ha ha! Guess what. In Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, Karan and his cronies poke so much fun at your Hrithik. One of Karan's friends' name is Hrithik and the guy who plays him is such a loser.

Mini: Hmph! Keep talking.

Simi: Anyway, Kareena aka Pooja is actually an NRI who comes down to India.

She's staying with her Uncle (Alok Nath) and cousins. She is here to do some research in Indian tradition and culture.

Mini: Do we have any such course here?

Simi: No clue! Anyway, she becomes a regular at Karan's house and wins everyone's heart, besides Karan's, of course.

Mini: So where's the love story?

Simi: He's too chicken to tell her. See, he's this good-for-nothing guy who has this major complex about approaching a Harvard babe.

Mini: Hmm. So is Tusshar as terrible as we thought he was?

Simi: Surprise! He's kinda sweet. He comes up with an endearing performance.

Mini: Omygod. When you saw the promos you went on and on about his glares and dress sense.Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai

Simi: Oh... he's got a fairly decent face. He shouldn't hide it behind those overpowering glares, y'know.

Hey, one thing that beats me is why these filmmakers try to dress a star son like their successful fathers. In Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa, Abhishek is tried to pass off as Amitabh Bachchan.

In some scenes of MKKH, Tusshar is made to dress in white pants and shoes a la Jeetu.

Mini: Whatever. No one can beat my Hrithik. What about Kareena?

Simi: She's magic, man. She's way cool. Her role's no big deal; any one can do it. But she makes the role like happening.

Mini: Yah, I like the way she looks in the film.

Simi: Boy, she's worn some fab outfits. Her wardrobe (by Manish Malhotra) is so hip.

Hey, we must get those double slit skirts and pastel salwars next time we go shopping.

Mini: Of course! I'd decided that when I saw the promos itself.

Simi: Oh and the music (Anu Malik) is foot-tapping stuff. I like Rabba mere rabba.

Mini: No, I like Maine koi jadoo nahi kiya better...Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai

Simi: Hmm. But you know what? More than the music, I liked the scenes between Karan and Ria.

Rinke doesn't have lengthy role, but she's good, man. Even Amrish Puri, for that matter.

Mini: Gawd, this is another Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge?

Simi: Actually, you're right. MKKH is a clean family entertainer. Don't miss the ending, though!
