TN govt restrains Sterlite factory from using furnaceThe Tamil Nadu government has restrained the Sterlite industry from using the rotary holding furnace, in the wake of the blast, which had claimed two lives at the industry's copper smelter plant at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday, August 30. An official release in Madras said the ban on the use of furnace would be in force till it was brought back to the normal functioning level. At present, the furnace was not safe to human lives. The government's decision on the use of furnace had been conveyed to the factory management through the deputy chief inspector of factories. The bomb detection and disposal squad which visited the factory to investigate the cause of the blasts, had concluded that the furnace blast was not caused by any bomb or explosive material but purely due to some internal technical problem.
