NSE gains another 10.40 pointsPivotals flared up further at the National Stock Exchange on Monday following good buying support from FIIs and speculators. Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 index opened at 1177.50 points, touched the day's high of 1189.40, slid to the low of 1172.05 and later closed at 1188.20, showing a net gain of 10.40 points over Friday's 1177.80. Similarly, the midcap index firmed up by 12.10 points (to 1315.80) as against the previous 1303.70 points. The total turnover on NSE was Rs 20.31 billion. ITC topped the turnover list by registering Rs 8.58 billion, followed by Reliance (Rs 3.81 billion, SBI (Rs 1.96 billion), Tata Tea (Rs 1.65 billion), and Tisco (Rs 527 million). Hectic activity was also observed at other counters like Castrol (Rs 488.8 million), ACC (Rs 407.2 million), Telco (Rs 308.6 million), Bajaj Auto (Rs 240.8 million), Hind Lever (Rs 183.8 million), MTNL (Rs 154.3 million), Colgate (Rs 151.5 million), ICICI (Rs 149.8 million), BHEL (Rs 133.5 million), Escorts (Rs 87.3 million), BPCL (Rs 81million), HDFC Bank (Rs 79.8 million), ICIC Bank (Rs 70.2 million), REL Capital (Rs 69.4 million), L and T (Rs 65.9 million), Satyam Comp (Rs 61.8 million), Dr Reddy (57.1 million), LML (Rs 50.4 million), REL Petro (Rs 46.2 million) and Arvind Mills (Rs 45.5 million). The top gainers of the day were HDFC Bank, GE Shipping, ITC, Castrol and Asian Paints. Tata Chem, ACC, Telco, Ashok Leyland and Tata Power were the heavy losers. NSE's debt market witnessed trades worth Rs 5.17 billion. The 10.85 per cent government loan maturing in 2001 was traded for Rs 850 million at a weighted yield of 10.41 per cent. The 12.59 per cent loan maturing in 2004 went for Rs 850 million at a weighted yield of 11.03 per cent. The 364 days treasury bill maturing on December 5, 1997 fetched Rs 200 million at 6.40 per cent. UNI |
